THE MASS EXTINCTION

The K-Pg boundary

66 million years ago, an asteroid measuring about 12 km collided with the Earth in the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) and produced one of the largest extinctions in Earth’s history. The dinosaurs and over 70% of all species disappeared forever.

This mass extinction is known as K-Pg because it marks the end of the Cretaceous period and the beginning of the Paleogene period, and Zumaia is one of its best manifestations.
