WHAT IS THE FLYSCH?
5,000 m of marine sediments
The flysch is a huge accumulation of petrified deep seabeds. Although today the layers are almost vertical, they were all formed horizontally beneath the sea.
If we were to place them in their original position, one on top of the other, the accumulated sediment would be over 5,000 metres thick!
The layers of the flysch are like the pages of a giant book, chronicling more than 60 million consecutive years of Earth’s history.
The flysch is a geological masterpiece.
